Health Analytics in Action: From Massive Data to Decision Making

Abstract: In this seminar I will introduce the Health Analytics research group at Georgia Tech’s Stewart School of Industrial & Systems Engineering, focusing on research to transforming data into relevant insights for making better healthcare delivery, public health decisions and health policies. Our research is anchored in real-world problems and questions in the health domain. We collaborate with a large and varied network of clinicians, large healthcare providers, and public health entities. One of the many projects we are working on includes a collaboration with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and the Institute of People and Technology at Georgia Tech on the acquisition of a large database of medical claims on people enrolled in the Medicaid health insurance. The data consist of 100s of billions of patient-identifiable claims records for children and adults enrolled in the Medicaid program across multiple years and states. The impact of our research is multi-fold. Our research informs decision making, grounded in rigorous analyses and in multiple sources of data. We also disseminate general and translatable methodologies to the research community and to public health entities.

Bio: Nicoleta Serban is an Associate Professor in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology.  She received her Ph.D. and M.S. in Statistics from Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Serban's current research crosses multiple disciplines including methodological statistics, healthcare and industrial engineering. Her research has been published or accepted in more than 50 journal articles, many in top journals in statistics, engineering, and health services research. She has also co-authored a book on the complexity of the healthcare system and she has initiated the Health Analytics Group at Georgia Tech (http://www.healthanalytics.gatech.edu).  Dr. Serban is currently an Editor of Annals of Applied Statistics, a leading journal in applied statistics. She has been invited to serve in several workshops and two frontiers of engineering symposiums organized by the National Academy of Engineering. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, Healthcare Georgia Foundation, and through multiple healthcare-focused grants from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Centers of Disease Prevention and Control among others.
